Residents, stall owners protest ban on MTS Sunday Bazaar

LAHORE: After the Punjab government imposed a ban on setting up Sunday Bazaars in Model Town Society, the stall owners and residents staged a protest against the government’s decision, Daily Times learnt on Sunday. Stall owners, customers and MTS residents took to the streets to protest against the imposition of the ban. Holding empty buckets of fruits and vegetables near M-Block area, the protesters demanded the government allow the bazaar to be held in the area. They said the bazaar had been held regularly at the same site for over five years, adding that shopkeepers and customers should be compensated for the cost of transporting goods to Faisal Town. Protesters chanted slogans against the commissioner, the City District Government Lahore, and the MTS administration for removing the bazaar from the society’s premises. Customers claimed the government had removed the bazaar to facilitate a new mega store in the area. They said a lot of people visited the bazaar for groceries, adding that now they would have to purchase everything from the store. Model Town Society (MTS) President Colonel (r) Tahir Kardar told Daily Times the society was compelled to follow the government’s instructions. He said the MTS administration was neither in favour nor against the government’s decision. He said the bazaar was located on the daily route of Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif and was posing security risks. He said the bazaar had been relocated at an open place in the adjacent Faisal Town. staff report
